Signature standards: signed, sealed, explained

Not every electronic signature is the same. The EU eIDAS regulation knows three levels: the higher the level, the more firmly it is proven who signed. swipesign relies exclusively on the two levels with real legal weight.

Just send an email instead. It carries about the same legal weight. And costs you less…
SES

Simple electronic signature

Like clicking “I agree” or a scanned name: quick, but hardly provable.

Typical forInternal notes and non-binding approvals

Evidential value: Weakin the age of AI?!?
Clearly linked to the signer: No
Identity verified: No
Later changes detectable: No
Still verifiable years later: No
Not enough
AES

Advanced electronic signature

Like a personal signature with a seal: clearly linked to you, any later change shows immediately.

Typical forB2B contracts, NDAs, quotes and everyday internal agreements

Evidential value: High
Clearly linked to the signer
Identity verified: Email or SMS PIN
Later changes detectable
Still verifiable years later
At swipesign: always included
QESHighest standard

Qualified electronic signature

Like your signature on paper, only digital: legally equivalent and recognised across the EU.

Typical forContracts requiring written form, loan and rental agreements, powers of attorney, M&A

Evidential value: HighestEquivalent to a handwritten signature
Clearly linked to the signer
Identity verified: ID document or eID
Later changes detectable
Still verifiable years later
At swipesign: always included

Identity verification

How a qualified signature is earned

For QES, signers complete a one-time identity verification with eIDAS-trusted providers: then sign with full confidence from then on.

  • Video ident or ID-app verification
  • 20+ national eIDs for QES from qualified trust service providers (QTSPs)
  • A qualified certificate, issued for the signature

Qualified for the long term

Valid on the day of signing. And twenty years later.

Placing a signature is easy. Being able to prove it years later is the real achievement, and the reason every signature with us carries the highest preservation level.

eIDAS 2.0, Regulation (EU) 2024/1183
“… for the purpose of extending their durability and legibility beyond the technological validity period.”
Recital 66. The regulation adds electronic archiving to the definition of a trust service (Art. 3(16)(m)).

That's exactly what PAdES B-LTA delivers: all certificate data and qualified timestamps are embedded in the PDF/A, and in the long-term archive they are monitored and renewed when needed. The signature remains verifiable even after the certificate used to create it has long expired. Without this level, a document is valid on the day of signing — and in year eight, a question you answer with witnesses instead of cryptography.

B-LTA

On every signature

Not as a higher tier, not as an add-on, not only above a certain volume. On the free plan too. B-LTA timestamps embedded directly in the PDF/A and verifiable wherever you store it.

Verifiable

For decades

Retention periods run for years, not months. For very long periods, the long-term archive monitors the timestamps and renews them when needed.

PDF/A

Verifiable with any tool

No proprietary format, no dependency on us. Load a signed document into any validator and see for yourself.

PAdES: let’s get techie

Four levels, one European standard

PAdES (PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures) is the standard that puts signatures right inside the PDF. It is set by ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, in EN 319 142, and recognised by the EU as a signature format under eIDAS.

The levels build on each other: the higher the level, the longer the signature can be checked without anyone’s help. swipesign applies B-LTA after every single signature, so each one gets its own qualified timestamp, currently from A-Trust.
